About The Book

"A Walk In Life And War:  Stories of Southern Gentlemen" contains biographies of 354 soldiers that lived in Southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia.  They are directly related to the author by blood or by marriage. The biographies are derived from a combination of the author’s family genealogy records merged with military research records during the Civil War.  The book covers 16 counties in Southwest Virginia and southern West Virginia.  There are over 55 families that had 5-7 sons in the War.  The biographies begin from their birth till their death.  The main source of family information is derived from the author’s family genealogical research database over a 40-year timespan.  The main source of the majority of the military information is derived from the General Index Cards (GICs). The GICs are the actual War records written by the soldiers in the regiments during the War. The book includes:  23 Infantry Regiments, 13 Cavalry Regiments, 3 Artillery Regiments, 2 Reserve Regiments, the VA Partisan Rangers and the 30th Battalion VA Sharpshooters.

The 352 page book is an informative reference tool for:   individuals, families and civil war research genealogists, for families that were or are living in the area, trying to research their ancestors, historical societies, genealogical societies, college and high school history teachers, church members where the soldiers lived and are buried, libraries, the Sons of Confederate Veterans, the Daughters of the Confederacy and those wanting to discover their ancestors.
