Here are portions of the biographies of a few of the extraordinary men discussed in the book.

Excerpt 1:  Edward was wounded in Sharpsburg, Maryland on September 17, 1862. He was wounded a second time on May 3, 1863 at the Battle of Chancellorsville. He was wounded a third time on November 27, 1863 at the Battle of Mine Run (Payne’s Farm) in Orange County, Virginia. He was captured as a POW on April 2, 1865 at the Siege of Petersburg. He was confined on April 6, 1865 as a POW at Point Lookout Prison in Maryland. He survived the War. At age 69 he and his grandson were killed by lightning on September 6, 1910 while working as stone masons.

Excerpt 2:   James was born in 1814 in Kentucky. He enlisted on March 28, 1863 in the 10th Kentucky Cavalry. He married Sarah in 1839 and they had 11 children. When he came home on leave in 1864 to see his family, he discovered his wife and one of his sons had died of smallpox.

Excerpt 3:  James’ parents were….. He married Lucy in 1858 and they had a baby girl. He died in 1862 leaving behind his wife and baby daughter. Lucy applied for a widow’s pension in 1888. She stated on the application that her husband died at home from fever from exposure, while in the service of being detailed in making salt peter near Marion, Virginia.

Excerpt 4:  At age 26 Michael enlisted as a Sergeant, on May 29, 1861 in the 45th VA Infantry, Co H. He was captured as a POW at Fort Stevens near Washington, D.C. as Lee’s Army was approaching Washington. He was a POW in the Old Capitol Prison in Washington, D.C. on July 13, 1864 for 10 days. He was transferred as a POW on July 15, 1864 to the Elmira, New York Prison. He was exchanged on March 14, 1865.
